Explaining Uni

October 30th, 2007

Esther used the baby’s code name in the title of the blog post yesterday and I figured it needed some explaining. We have taken to calling the baby Uni. The name is two-fold:

  1. The baby is going to be born in June, the German translation of which is Juni.
  2. We are not going to find out the baby’s gender, so the baby will remain unisex, until he or she is born.

So if you read about Uni, that’s the baby. FYI.

Uni strikes a pose

October 29th, 2007

Our first appointment was this morning and it went really well. The baby is developing right on schedule and we got to see it’s little heart beating on the ultrasound machine. We even got these sonogram pictures to take home. The very first pictures of our quite tiny baby.

Today is a very happy day indeed!

It won’t suck…right?

October 28th, 2007

Today, Esther and I bought a Dyson vacuum. While not directly baby related, it will make for a nicer home that baby will come home to. Let me tell you, that thing has some major suction, our floors are cleaner than they have been in years.

Monday, October 29th, tomorrow, Esther and I have our first appointment with the OB. We should get a full work-up and an ultrasound. I guess we will get to hear the baby’s heart beat. Esther showed me some fuzzy, blurry photos of 8-week ultrasounds tonight. Between you and me, they look like blips on the radar and not much else.

If we get any pictures of the radar blip, I’ll post them here. Wish us luck!

Mmmmm Sushi…

October 27th, 2007

Ever since Jered told me I could have sushi I have been thinking about it. The funny thing about being pregnant is that when you think about a food enough you start to really want it. I don’t know if I’d call it a craving, but for lack of a better word…

So tonight (I had resisted all day) my mom and brother came over to drop off Jered’s birthday gift and card and they both started talking about sushi. That was all it took. A phone call was made to our favorite local sushi place and half an hour later I was at home eating an american dream roll and a spicy california roll. Delicious! Although they say it is safe to eat all sushi (because the fish is flash frozen and this kills bacteria) I wanted to play it safe so I got sushi that wasn’t raw- both rolls contained cooked shrimp and crab.

It really hit the spot!

A day without a nap!

October 26th, 2007

Just thought I would post about an amazing feat. At least, relatively amazing. I got up this morning at 7:30 and am still awake with no nap!

I didn’t start feeling tired until we got home tonight around 6:30. It’s Jered’s birthday so we had a nice pizza dinner in and had some ice cream cake for dessert. It could be all the food that has put me into the sleepy zone, but I have a feeling it has something to do with the fact that I didn’t take a nap today.

Monday we should be posting a pretty big update since we have our first doctor’s appointment then and we should get to see the baby and hear the heartbeat!

Sushi baby?

October 24th, 2007

sushiEsther says that she has learned she can have sushi, that will make the next 9 months that much easier. She heard on the Pregtastic Podcast, which I have verified by this nytimes article by Stephen Shaw (via megnut)

“Why take any risk?” they ask. The medical establishment and the culture at large have twisted logic around to the point where any risk, no matter how infinitesimal, is too much. So powerful is this Puritanical impulse that, once a health objection is raised, however irrational the recommended behavior, it’s considered irresponsible to behave any other way.

You have no idea how happy that makes by baby’s momma.

We’re growing a person!

October 23rd, 2007

It has been so strange and exciting to find out that we’re pregnant. Until recently I didn’t have any symptoms except extraordinary sleepiness. That was until this past weekend. It seems that the baby is doing quite well because I suddenly have all sorts of fun symptoms, only some of which I want to make public! The most frustrating thing so far has been the nausea. I wasn’t expecting to feel so sick to my stomach or to lose my appetite so quickly! Jered had a genius idea and made me little packets of crackers to take with me everywhere. These have helped tremendously. It seems like the nausea only shows up when my blood sugar gets low and goes away when I have something very plain to eat.

The strangest part of all of this is that while I’m tired and nauseated and a few other things, with every symptom I can’t help but be more excited. Somehow the symptoms make me feel that all of this is real. You might think that sounds crazy but we found out on October 2nd and the only “proof” we have of the pregnancy so far is three very positive home pregnancy tests! Our first doctor’s appointment is this coming Monday the 29th. Once we have the doctor’s official stamp of pregnancy I’m sure things will feel more real for both of us! The OB practice where we are going does a routine ultrasound during the first appointment since they don’t do their first appointments until 8 weeks. We will get to see our little speck of a baby and hear it’s heartbeat- there is nothing I can think of more exciting than that!

Designing Baby-space

October 22nd, 2007

While the baby currently has some pre-designed digs, Esther and I have been thinking about the environment that our child will inhabit sans womb.

We have already painted the baby’s room (pre-pregnancy of course), a nice hue of orange and powder blue.

Now I am thinking that it might be nice to add some art to the walls. Rather than pounding some nails into the sheetrock, I am thinking that vinyl clings might be the best way for us to add some flair to the room.

Two nice things about these wall-clings. They are cheap, relatively. I have seen some that go for a whole lot more. They are removable. So when little baby grows out of them and wants to put up a Metallica poster, a beautiful mural will not be destroyed.

What do you think?

Hello world!

October 21st, 2007

You know the standard first post that comes with a wordpress blog installation is quite humorous when you are talking about babies. Hello World takes on a whole new meaning.
